Whole Family Financial Planning

Do you ever wonder what life would have been like if you had known more about money when you were younger?

Financial lessons weren’t ever something you were given at school. So how did you learn?

Well, the truth is that you probably learned through mistakes, and stuff you just picked up along the way.

And your attitude to money?

That’s likely to be a combination of things – your upbringing, your parents, your salary, your partner, your beliefs and so on.

But what if it could be different?

What if the best gift you could give your children, even if they are now adults, is to learn about money early on. To understand what it can do for them – and what could be possible.

And, that doesn’t just mean stashing every bit of spare cash away for a rainy day!

This is where whole family financial planning comes in. Learning to work with a professional who will guide them through the financial maze is a wonderful gift.

More importantly, it teaches your family early on to think about what they would like their life to look like. That their dreams can become a reality, with the right focus and effort.

Actually – that’s the perfect time to raise the question for you too…

Do you know what you want for your children? Would you like them to go to nursery or have an independent education? Does that education start from the age of four? Or would you rather they waited until they reached secondary age?

What about further education? Would you like to ease their path? How much would it mean to you to help them with their first car? Their first house?

And, if your children are now adults – what about their children? How do your children feel about giving their children the same things? And how do you feel about providing for your grandchildren?

Why am I talking about this?

Because this is the foundation to you sitting down with your family and having this discussion with them.

Many families are dysfunctional in some way. Divorce, re-marriage, mistakes from the past – they all play a part. There really is no such thing as “normal”. And that’s fine, because it is part of life’s rich tapestry.

But wouldn’t it be so much better to talk about your plans for the future. And let your family talk about theirs too. You would all know where you stood and what the future holds.

And, by the way, that also includes estate planning. Nobody should be planning their lives on the assumption of what they might inherit one day. There are far too many variables to get in the way, not least of which are illness, long term care and changes in family dynamics.

Getting everybody in your family, and that includes your own parents, to plan financially to enable them all to live their best lives is the best gift you can give them all. And that’s regardless of what the future looks like.
